Today I’ve decided to write about stretched sail shades, because it’s a product that has been hugely fashionable for years on our neighbouring island, Ibiza, and is now starting to make its way, in force, into Mallorca.

As I mentioned in the previous paragraph, we’ve been working with this product for some time in restaurants, bars, beach clubs and private homes, among others, in Ibiza, with wonderful results. In fact, people who ask me for this product in Mallorca nowadays often ask for “Ibizan-style sail shades.” I prefer to call them “Mediterranean-style sail shades,” because with the huge variety of shapes and styles we can create, we can adapt them to modern, rustic, period or vintage-style properties.

You might be thinking, “but these sail shades are a very modern trend”… My answer is, not entirely. Think back to how, in the past, people used to shelter from the sun on their terraces with a large canvas anchored from wall to wall, or from a wall to a pole. And this is precisely the origin of these sail shades. The concept is the same, only now they’re more developed, with more design, creating their own style and blending with architectural elegance.

What shapes are available?
The canvas allows for countless colours and shapes to be made. There are triangular, rectangular, trapezoid-shaped ones, and more.
Is it functional?
Absolutely — it adapts to any space and offers up to 95% sun protection (depending on the fabric), while keeping the hot air out.
You can also keep them up in summer and, when the cold weather arrives and you no longer need them, unhook them from the masts, clean them (depending on the type of fabric) and store them rolled up and well protected in a cover, so the fabric doesn’t get damaged or pick up moisture.
