What Is SCREEN Fabric?

3 min read

What do we know as SCREEN?

In recent years, the word SCREEN has become widely used to describe roller blinds or roller shades. SCREEN tends to be confused with any type of fabric wound around a roller tube, regardless of the specific characteristics of the fabric in question. Nothing could be further from the truth. Roller blinds are made with a huge variety of fabrics, and only some of them are genuinely SCREEN. In other words, there are roller blinds made with SCREEN fabric and others made with linen or polyester fabric.

SCREEN is a fabric made from PVC-coated yarns. The yarns can be fibreglass or polyester, but in either case they share the fact that they are coated in PVC by immersion before being woven.

So why is the word SCREEN becoming so widespread?

For two reasons: (i) because the general public and even professionals in the sector are unfamiliar with the term, and (ii) because SCREEN is a fantastic fabric that is used more and more. SCREEN has very specific advantages over other fabrics, as follows:

Advantage No. 1 of SCREEN: Visual comfort

Improves the light conditions in the room.

Choosing one type of SCREEN or another helps us control the light entering the room and minimise reflections on computer screens, television screens or any other surface exposed to direct sunlight.

Advantage No. 2 of SCREEN: Thermal comfort

Reduces air-conditioning needs, achieving significant energy savings and helping protect the environment.

It is difficult to generalise about how many degrees this fabric reduces the temperature by, because the result depends on several factors, such as colour, openness factor, the distance between the blind and the window, and the type of glass, among others. However, as a rough guide, the figure could be around 60–70% if the SCREEN is installed outdoors and 20–30% if the SCREEN is installed indoors.

Advantage No. 3 of SCREEN: Privacy

Provides different degrees of privacy depending on the openness factor of the selected fabric.

Advantage No. 4 of SCREEN: Hygiene

SCREEN does not absorb dirt — on the contrary, it repels it. This makes it ideal for anyone with allergy problems. Its maintenance is simple:

Advantage No. 5 of SCREEN: Durability

The lifespan of this fabric is exceptional. It has excellent mechanical resistance to breaking and tearing, great dimensional stability, does not warp with heat, does not shrink, is rot-proof, and its colours resist the effects of light, remaining stable over time.
