As children grow, so does their curiosity about the world around them. Everyday household items, such as the cords or chains on curtains and blinds, can turn into a toy and, as a result, a potential hazard for little ones.

At Área Deluxe, children’s safety is a priority, which is why our blinds and curtains comply with European standard EN 13120 on internal blinds.
As I’ve mentioned in previous posts, when choosing blinds and curtains we need to consider various factors such as decor, durability, light management, and energy savings, among others. But alongside all of these, we also need to think about children’s safety, especially in homes with children, or places children visit, such as restaurants, children’s play centres, language schools, and more. This is what’s known in the industry as Child Safety.

Child Safety
Cords and chains used to operate curtains and blinds are affordable and convenient, but in the hands of children they can be dangerous. Every parent knows just how inventive a child can be. If a chain is left hanging loose, a child could end up wrapping it around their neck and risk choking.
Fortunately, a solution to this problem has already been invented, because it would be a shame to give up the convenience of a chain as a way of operating a blind or curtain.

That’s why all our manually operated products come with a Child Safety system included.
It’s a small transparent piece that’s fitted to the wall, ideally at a height of one and a half metres from the floor, allowing the cord or chain to be held taut and eliminating the risk for the little ones in the home.

If you don’t have a Child Safety system installed at home and you have children, give us a call and ask for the part. It’s easy to fit and you could even do it yourself.
Here are a few brief tips for homes with children where there are manually operated blinds or curtains:
-
Young children can be strangled by the cords, chains or tapes that operate window curtains.
-
To prevent strangulation and tangling, keep cords out of children’s reach.
-
Keep beds, cots and furniture away from curtain cords.
-
Don’t tie cords together.
-
Prevent cords from twisting or forming knots.
-
Install and use Child Safety systems to help reduce the risk of accidents.
