A Practical Guide to Choosing Curtains or Blinds for Your Children's Bedroom

Curtains and blinds fitted in a children’s bedroom

Decorating our children’s bedrooms is something that gets parents especially excited — and if we manage to get our children involved, it excites them too, because it’s their space within the home: the place made just for them, exclusively for their comfort. It’s where they’ll play, sleep, and where they’ll feel safest.

Just like any other room in the house, curtains or blinds for children’s bedrooms call for a few specific considerations when it comes to choosing the ones that fit best. Here’s a guide to help you choose what works best for your children’s room:

  1. Listen to your children’s preferences: favourite colours, shapes and patterns that they like.

  2. For your curtain or blind to do its job as solar protection as well as look good, you need to consider whether the window gets direct sunlight (light exposure), since this determines the type of fabric you’ll need.

For example, if the room gets a lot of light, we recommend a Screen or Polyscreen® fabric with 1% or 3% openness. This way, you’ll control how much light comes in, reduce heat, and protect the colours of the furniture and textiles in the room.

If the room gets little light, the best option is a very sheer voile-type fabric, or a Screen or Polyscreen® fabric with 10% or 14% openness.

  1. If what you’re after is total darkness to guarantee your children get a good night’s sleep, choose a blackout fabric, whether for a roller blind or a traditional curtain.

  2. Another aspect worth considering for your children’s safety is the characteristics of the fabric. In other words, choose materials that aren’t flammable, are easy to clean, and are organic, breathable fabrics like cotton, so as not to affect your little ones’ health.

  3. The size of the room also matters when choosing a curtain or blind: if you have a small room, we’d suggest a simple type of curtain, such as a blind, a traditional curtain with soft, gentle folds, or a roller blind in light or neutral colours, which have a lighter effect without too many decorative elements, so as not to overload the space.

  4. When it comes to fabric colour, you need to take into account the furniture already in the room. Beyond patterns, you can also choose tones that match the colour of the walls or floor, creating an attractive contrast.

We hope this short guide helps you choose the best curtain or blind for your children’s bedroom, and that you end up with a room straight out of their dreams.
